In this week’s L&D QuestionTime we hear from Adrian Harvey CEO at Elephants Don’t Forget.
In your opinion what is the biggest anxiety within the world of learning and development at the moment?
“Anxiety” is an interesting choice of word it implies fear and fear implies that something is going to hurt me. But, it’s a good and appropriate word because I think if in-house L&D community carry on the way that most are going, then they will be extinct in the current form in a decade.
Who or what is informing your thinking around L&D?
Our customers, Regulators, The LPI (obviously!) and various forums
What is the most exciting innovation on the horizon for learning?
Well of course we would say Clever Nelly wouldn’t we! But seriously, its about technology and I don’t mean using an LMS to save some money on chalk-n-talk sessions I mean using technology to deliver training in a form that learners want, when they want, that is tailored to their individual needs and actually delivers genuine learning that in turn drives job role performance improvement. Otherwise why bother being trained?
What “game changers” would you like to see and why?
I would like to see in-house L&D stand-up and be counted and take the fight to operational line management and to speak the language of business not the insular, irrelevant language of the L&D department. To help stressed line managers deliver against their ever more challenging scorecard – by really understanding the drivers of the scorecard and collaborating with line management to asses, up-skill and measure the results of training based interventions and really prove their worth.
What do you think the world of L&D will look like by 2020?
I don’t know about 2020, but by 2025 those who haven’t worked out how to deliver what management need rather than carping about ‘not being appreciated’ and ‘ always having budgets cut’ will either be redundant, outsourced or presiding over an ever shrinking cost centre delivering ‘required learning’ in the cheapest possible way. Those who recognise that the industry is undergoing the biggest changes it has ever seen and use learning (not training) to help line management increase performance will thrive.
What advice would you give your 21 year old self?
Take your entire salary and invest it in Apple shares!
